The Lizzadro Magnetic Resonance Research Center supports research carried out at the University of Notre Dame in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, and related fields. The Center operates seven different nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers for liquids analysis ranging in magnetic field strength from 7.05 to 18.79 T, corresponding to proton resonance frequencies of 300 to 800 MHz, respectively. Three workstations for remote data processing are also maintained by the Center.

The 700 and 800 MHz spectrometers are equipped with triple resonance cryoprobes enabling measurements of extremely dilute sample solutions or exceptionally large macromoleules. These spectrometers, and the 600 and 500 MHz instruments, are dedicated mainly to studies of the molecular structures and dynamics of macromolecules; complex carbohydrates, nucleic acids, and proteins. They are fully equipped to allow the development of new multidimensional NMR spectroscopy experiments. Two 300 MHz and one 400 MHz spectrometers are available for structure determinations and dynamics studies of smaller molecules.

Students are trained on the operation of the NMR spectrometers in order to to be able to perform all needed experiments independently. The Center also holds regular monthly seminars to keep users informed about the latest experimental techniques and recent developments in NMR spectroscopy instrumentation.
