Research Interests

The research in Professor Hartland's laboratory involves using optical spectroscopy to examine the properties of materials with nanometer sized dimensions. Current emphasis is on single particle experiments, both steady state spectroscopy studies and time-resolved measurements. Some specific topics of interest are:

(i) Effect of size, shape and composition on the plasmon resonances of metal particles.

(ii) Vibrational response of metal nanoparticles to ultrafast laser-induced heating.

(iii) Development and application of novel optical imaging techniques.

(iv) Energy flow in nanostructures.
